The ecoregion, forest and carbon tool is an internal experiment by GFD consulting Ltd.
This web map application use various data set from MARD and FAO. The purpose of this tool is to enable end user to quickly explore the information about forest, management and carbon at a high level of data aggregation. Instead of looking at individual forest plot, user will get information that are summarized by eco-region, sub eco-region and province.
The tool is developed as an experiment to explore different method to visualize and communicate forest ecology information. As more data become available it can be easily adapted to serve data on biodiversity, social-economic, environment and more importantly the integration of those individual dataset to investigate and predict future trends.
This web mapping tool is built entirely by FOSS (Free and Open source Software), some of the main tools that has been used for this project are: PostGIS for database storage, uDig for map styling and tile generation, GeoSever for webmap service creation, OpenLayer for Webmap front end, PHP and Java scrip for customize web interface. By leveraging FOSS this is possible to build and deploy Web Map application with minimum investment.
Forest status data is taken from Vietnam forest status map 2010. The digital map was provided by Forest Inventory and Planning Institute (FIPI).
Forest management status:
In Vietnam forests are classified into three forest type: special use forest, protection forest, and production forest.
• The main role of special-use forests is nature conservation, protection of historical and cultural site, and tourism.
• Protection forests are maintained to protect water streams and soils, prevent soil erosion and mitigate natural disasters.
• Production forests have the main purpose of supplying timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs), but in addition provide environmental protection.
The data source for forest management function is taken from: FIPI (2011) Forest status map of Vietnam 2000. Forest Inventory and Planning Institute.
Forest biomass carbon
Forest biomass carbon is derived from forest status map. Average standing volume for each forest type is estimated from system of 2000 permanent plot managed by FIPI. The total forest biomass carbon was then calculated following method by Brown, S. et al (1989). The source for average standing volume is provided by Nordeco (2010). Ecoregion data is taken from a study implemented by Research Center for Forest Ecology and Environment (RCFEE) in 2010. The study is funded by FAO as part of preparation for REDD+ in Vietnam. In this eco-region map Vietnam is divided into 8 eco-region and 47 sub-eco region. The purpose of this study is to arrive at a number of relatively homogeneous strata of forest. The homogeneity is important as it reduced variance in the measurements of carbon ‒ which may be expected in homogeneous strata ‒ requires fewer samples to arrive at an estimate with minimal error and maximum confidence.
